Tableau Products

Tableau Server
Tableau Desktop
Tableau Public
Tableau Online
Tableau Reader

Tableau Reader:

Its a free desktop application that can be used to  view the Workbook created by others.

Usually when a developer creates a Workbook he would upload it on Tableau Server for others to view, or other can open the workbook if they have Tableau Desktop, which is a paid product.

So when you want to share the workbook with other who are outside your enterprise (i.e. bi access to your Tableau Server) and do not have Tableau Desktop (since it needs license); other can use Tableau Reader to view the Workbook.

Distributing content with Tableau Reader require that the Workbook should be Packaged one. Tableau Packaged Workbook (.twbx) require local file sources such as Excel, Access, text/csv files, Tableau Data Extract files(.tde)

Tableau Online:

Its is Tableau Server on the Cloud.
